Planning a bourbon trip looks easy from the outside. Search Google. Pick three famous distilleries. Make reservations. Find transportation. Done.
Except three great distilleries don't automatically make a great bourbon day.
At Louisville Guest Services, we lead with one simple idea: Experience Kentucky Well. You tell us why you're coming, and we build the day around it. That might mean bourbon. It might mean horses, golf, food, family time, or a celebration that deserves more than a copied itinerary.
Here's how it works. Our Sipping Directors bring the bourbon culture, education and storytelling. Louisville Guest Services handles everything behind it: transportation, timing, dining and all the little details that help the day flow.
Tell us why you're coming, and we'll build the day around it.
Plan My Bourbon DayGoogle Doesn't Know Your Group
Everybody chases the big names. They search for the “best bourbon distilleries in Kentucky,” see the same names over and over, and assume those are the places they have to visit.
There's nothing wrong with the big names. Google can tell you what's popular. Reviews can tell you what someone else enjoyed. But none of it knows your group.
So we don't start by asking which distilleries are available. We start with you.
- How much do you already know about bourbon?
- Are you brand new to it, or do you have a collection at home?
- Are you celebrating something?
- Is there a bottle you've been chasing, or a brand you already love?
- Are you more interested in production, history, rare bottles, cocktails, food, or simply a great day together?
Those answers change everything. Serious collectors shouldn't get the same itinerary as twelve friends celebrating a birthday, where three people love bourbon and everyone else just wants a great Kentucky day.
The takeawayThe people come first. The itinerary follows.
Three Is the Magic Math
The trouble usually isn't the distilleries. It's trying to squeeze three or four full production tours into one day. You hear the history. See the mash. See the stills. Walk the warehouse. Taste the bourbon. Back in the vehicle. Then you do it again. And again.
Somewhere around stop four, the group gets quieter. The questions slow down. Phones come out more than rickhouses get noticed. That's what Angelique calls getting bourbon zapped. The bourbon didn't get less interesting. The day was built like a checklist instead of an invitation.
That's why we land on what Angelique calls the magic math: three curated experiences. Enough to feel like you've truly been in Bourbon Country, without feeling like you survived it.
Three Styles of a Bourbon Day
Once we know who's coming, the day usually takes shape in one of three rhythms. Not boxes we put you in. Rhythms we build together.
Discovery is for guests who are new to bourbon or traveling with a mixed group. Approachable tastings, distilleries known for welcoming visitors, a comfortable pace, and learning to nose and taste with confidence. It's how you fall in love with Bourbon Country without feeling intimidated.
Signature is our curated flagship day. It might pair a big name like Buffalo Trace with smaller craft distilleries where you meet the people behind the bourbon, then finish at one of Louisville's best bourbon bars, where the bartenders know to pull something special for our guests. It's made for first-timers who want the full picture, and for milestone birthdays and anniversaries, where the goal isn't more stops. It's more intention.
Expert is for serious enthusiasts and collectors who come for access: working rickhouses beyond the showroom, time with master distillers and blenders, allocated bottles that never see a retail shelf, and the stories behind the liquid. It's for guests who already know wheated from high-rye and want to go behind the velvet rope.
And corporate teams? Leaders rarely book bourbon for the whiskey alone. They book it because connection feels forced in the conference room. A well-run tasting gives everyone a part to play: comparing notes, choosing a direction, agreeing on a flavor. Suddenly that shared decision is a story the team carries back to the office.
The takeawayEvery style can be shaped around what your group loves, whether that's horses, golf, food, history or cocktails. The interests become the flavor. The style sets the pace and the access.
Sometimes the Bottle Shouldn't Hijack the Day
Buffalo Trace is a perfect example. A guest may tell us they absolutely have to be there first thing in the morning because they're hoping to buy an allocated bottle.
But standing in line can take a big part of the day, and there's still no guarantee the bottle will be there. So we ask: Are you trying to experience Buffalo Trace, or are you trying to find a bottle? Those aren't always the same goal.
Sometimes protecting several hours of your day, and knowing where else to look, makes more sense. That's the thinking behind Hunting with Angelique. Guests arrive chasing the bottles they've already Googled. Sometimes we can introduce them to bottles that are even harder to find, stores they'd never discover on their own, or something completely unexpected.
The takeawayThe best bottle you bring home may not be the one you came looking for. And honestly? That's often the better story.
The Details Guests Never See
Some of our most important decisions have nothing to do with reservations. What time are we picking you up? Will you need snacks in the vehicle? What music fits this group? Where should lunch happen? What happens if a tour runs long?
What happens when someone finds the mother lode and suddenly has far more bourbon than luggage? We have bubble wrap. We think about extra suitcases. We keep a few favorite restaurants in our back pocket.
And yes, sometimes a carefully planned lunch turns into pizza in the vehicle because the group found something worth staying for. That doesn't mean the day went wrong. It means we know how to adjust without letting the day fall apart.
The takeawayWe plan the day, but we leave room for the day to happen.
It All Starts at the Welcome Social
We're big believers in try it before you buy it. But you should also know how to try it. Before the first distillery, our Welcome Social teaches guests how to nose and taste bourbon and, most importantly, figure out what they actually like.
It also gives the group a chance to settle in, ask questions and get comfortable with one another. It's a small beginning that changes the rhythm of the whole trip.
The Stories Matter as Much as the Stops
The best bourbon experiences don't happen on a crowded bus or behind a rope. They happen around a tasting table, in the rickhouse, and in conversation with the people who make the whiskey.
Our Sipping Directors connect the day: the families, the towns, the people and the places you're passing along the way. Those stories explain why two distilleries that look alike online can feel completely different once you're standing in them.
And with private transportation, you spend less time thinking about parking and directions, and more time noticing the Bluegrass, the limestone, the horse farms and the historic towns outside the window. We know the bourbon, and we know the back roads.
The takeawayThe distilleries are part of the experience. They aren't the entire experience.
And Then There's the Ride Home
This may be our favorite part. Sometimes everybody's singing along to songs that somehow became part of the trip. Sometimes nobody says a word because everyone's sound asleep. Either one is perfect.
By then, the day has done what it was supposed to do. You found a favorite distillery. You learned something. You probably bought more bourbon than you planned. You ate well. You laughed. And somewhere along the way, a group of reservations turned into a story you'll tell when you get home.
We have guests coming back for their fourth trip with us. Not because they need another introductory tour, but because every bourbon day can be different.
Frequently Asked Questions
Three full production tours can start to feel repetitive, especially when each includes similar history, production steps, warehouse visits, and tastings. We prefer building in variety, thoughtful pacing, smaller stops, good food, and room for conversation instead of rushing from one reservation to the next.
We start with the guest: their experience level, celebration, bottle goals, favorite brands, and interests. From there, we match the group with distilleries and experiences that fit their curiosity, pace, and personality.
Buffalo Trace may be an important stop, but arriving early to pursue an allocated bottle can mean spending a significant part of the day in line without a guarantee of finding it. We ask whether the goal is to experience Buffalo Trace or to find a particular bottle, then build the day around that answer.
A Sipping Director brings storytelling, local knowledge, day-building, and flexibility to the experience. We connect the stops, explain the places and people along the way, manage the details, and adapt when the group discovers something worth lingering over.
The Welcome Social is a private gathering that introduces guests to Bourbon Country before the distillery visits begin. Guests learn how to nose and taste bourbon, explore what they enjoy, ask questions, and settle into the trip together.
We build most days in one of three styles. Discovery is for newcomers and mixed groups, built around education and approachable tastings. Signature is our curated flagship day, pairing a name-recognition distillery with craft stops and a favorite bourbon bar. Expert is for serious enthusiasts and collectors, built around rickhouse access, master distiller conversations, and rare pours. Every style can be shaped around what the group loves, from horses and golf to food and history.
Private transportation means your vehicle, route, timing, and day flow are built around your group. It does not automatically mean the distillery experience itself is private. A regular distillery experience averages around $65 to $75 per person, while a truly private distillery experience runs approximately $250 to $500 per person, depending on the distillery, access, and what is included.
